Through a special agreement with Howard and Dot Ameling, and to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society, the NKPHTS is pleased to be able to present a gallery of the complete Howard W. Ameling Nickel Plate Road Photo Collection in the NKPHTS web site Members Area. These photos represent the life's work of one of America's noted rail photographers and rail image collectors. The collection includes photos of the Nickel Plate, predecessor roads Lake Erie &Western and Toledo, St. Louis & Western (Clover Leaf), lessee Wheeling & Lake Erie and affiliated road Detroit & Toledo Shore Line, and spans a period from the early 20th Century to the Nickel Plate's merger with the Norfolk & Western in 1964.
Containing thousands of images of motive power (both steam and diesel), freight, passenger and maintenance of way equipment, as well as stations and structures, the collection will be of interest to railfans, modelers, and historians alike. Presented in digital format, the gallery is arranged by category, so locating particular material is extremely user-friendly.
Howard began photographing railroad subjects in 1948 when he attended the Chicago Railroad Fair. The Nickel Plate Road was one of his earliest subjects as he initially concentrated on local railroads in and around his hometown of Fremont, Ohio. Eventually, his travels took him all over the Nickel Plate System and he began trading photos and negatives with other rail photographers of the period. For more than 50 years, Howard traveled throughout the US and Canada, photographing scores of different railroads.
A Founding Member of the Nickel Plate Road Historical & Technical Society in 1966, Howard's NKP photos have appeared in dozens of NKPHTS publications, as well as several books published on both the Nickel Plate and the Wheeling & Lake Erie. He has also provided photos to many other rail societies and his photos have been published in numerous railfan magazines and railroad books. The Howard W. Ameling Collection is now part of the Society's Historical Collections housed at the Western New York Railway Historical Society.
The pictures below represent only a fraction of the approximately 5000 photos found in the complete gallery. The images you will see are smaller and lower in resolution than the images in the Members Area gallery. To gain access to the complete collection in our Members Area, we invite you to become a member of the NKPHTS. Member support is vitally important to fulfilling the Society's educational and preservation goals, so we also hope you will tell your friends about the gallery and about the NKPHTS. Mr. Ameling has also provided us with photographs for our Preservation Pictures area and Shared Pictures area.
