Front: Finding a surviving Nickel Plate Road structure can be quite difficult forty years after the company disappeared. It's not impossible, however. Not only does the NKP depot in New Castle, Indiana still exist, but it remains in service for Norfolk Southern. Not substantially altered from its Nickel plate days, the building basks in the sunshine in September 2002.

Back: More than a few Nickel Plate Alcos went on to enjoy "second lives" for short lines and industrial users. One such unit was RS11 569. After retirement by the Norfolk & Western, the 1958 Alco put in 23 years of service for Illinois short line Kankakee, Beaversville & Southern. In her youth, the 569 reposes at Indianapolis in 1960.
