Car 831 - letters to the Editor

Tack Board- questions from readers

Front: Once a dynamometer car, always a dynamometer car. After the 1964 merger, the Norfolk & Western quickly disposed of Nickel Plate X-50041. The 1924-built veteran was far from used up; Alco acquired this car to accompany its Century 430 demonstrators. In this issue, Lloyd Scott recounts the X-50041's second life.

Back: For forty years, the X-50041 played a key role in Nickel Plate motive power evaluation. The car participated in demonstrator testing, and in between times made the rounds of the system, recording the performance of man and machine to make the Nickel Plate a more efficient railroad. A look at the record shows just how successful the X-50041's efforts were.
