The Nickel Plate had a presence in the heart of downtown Chicago through its lease of Illinois Central property at South Water Street, where it and the C&O shared a freight house. This 1943 view of Chicago's skyline fronting Michigan Avenue looks west from the vicinity of today's Lake Shore Drive across the northern end of IC's Congress Street Yard and the Water Street freight house area for IC, NKP, and C&O.
