Tack Board- questions from readers

Front: Railroad lanterns have cast a long shadow on the industry, from the ornate but fragile whale-oil numbers of railroading's infancy to today's battery-powered ones. The most romantic and best-remembered are the kerosene lanterns we are all familiar with. Six specimens, representing most of the Nickel Plate's history, stand in the late afternoon sunlight.

Back: Even after the demise of steam, there was drama to be found at trackside. In a classic scene from the late 1950's, the 477, 500, and an unidentified sister accelerate eastbound tonnage through (we believe) Muncie on the eve of the Space Age.
